Why do people go for counseling?

Clients may choose to participate in counseling for various reasons. This includes learning how to:

1) Improve their coping skills. It may be that the client's existing coping skills are insufficient to cope with the current stressors or it could be that the coping mechanisms are unhealthy.

2) Deal with a recent life change or traumatic event. This can include anything from processing the event to finding ways to move forward after it happened. The first step to healing is to acknowledge that the trauma occurred and impacted you.

3) Improve certain aspects in their lives. It may be that the client feels the need to engage in personal growth or feel like they need to change something about their mind or emotions to become the person they want to be.

How do I know that it will work for me?

Counseling is something that will work for everyone, however there are certain conditions that must first be met.

1) You need to want help. Counseling will not be effective if you are just doing it to please a friend or a partner.

2) You need to be willing to put in the effort it takes to change/adapt. Counseling itself is usually only 45 minutes to an hour per week. The majority of the work is done outside of sessions when you engage in homework activities and apply the knowledge that you have gained during therapy.

3) You need to find the right counselor. Not every counselor and client will be a good match and it is important to find someone who is trained to work with clients in your specific situation.
